Computers have become studios, digital downloading has revolutionised the music industry and the boundaries between rock and dance music have become increasingly blurred. Similarly, in the same period Ruskin has rebuilt his studio, started a family and suddenly last year lost his best friend and Blueprint co-founder, Richard Polson. Taking stock of all these experiences and developments brings us to a new composition that is a huge step in Ruskin’s musical development and fitting testament to the inspiration and life of a close friend. Forming a massive leap in sound that joins the dots between his previous dancefloor savvy material with intricate basslines, beautiful melodies and hypnotic rhythms, ‘The Dash’ is the mark of an artist in full control of his sound. Ruskin`s early exposure to musical alternatives via active radio and club scenes affected his own need for self-expression and identity through music. The rampant electro, hip-hop and emerging Detroit techno scenes channelled his influences toward more electronic sources enough to inspire his own productions in the early 90s. His step toward DJing had already been made in 1991 and his blinding mixing style was earning him top spots across the UK and eventually worldwide by 1996, coinciding with his and Polson’s first releases as ‘Outline’ on the emerging force that was Blueprint. With Ruskin constantly delivering the Blueprint message to the clubs, his own production signature became more frequent, resulting in his first solo releases on Blueprint, spawning classic club tracks such as ‘The Divide’ and ‘After Dark‘ whilst his collaborations with Surgeon, Polson’s Surface imprint and Oliver Ho’s Meta label and remix work brought his name to a wider audience. With the focus on British techno sharpened by the late nineties, the scene' s welcome reaction to his ‘Further Design’ (Blueprint, 1997) debut album propelled his name and motivation still further. Already a guest DJ at Berlin’s infamous Tresor sweatbox he was to begin a long-standing musical relationship with the label that continues today. Two albums, ‘Point 2’ (2000) and ‘Into Submission’ (2001) quickly followed, cementing his sound within the world’s electronic elite and then Ruskin took a back seat from production, regrouped and developed new strategies. “I didn’t feel over that period that I had what I needed to complete an album,” says Ruskin of his six year hiatus. “I didn’t want to put an album out with no real point or focus so I continued working on various tracks and remixes whilst I rebuilt my studio and looked at different ways of working. There was a long break because I didn’t want to keep doing the same thing, I wanted to explore different ideas and new production techniques.” These new techniques have spawned a sound full of depth and atmosphere whereby basslines become melody hooks and tracks such as the opening sequence link four different sections together like a conductor building and bridging the composite segments of a concerto. The dancefloor is never far away but the warm; tunnel like encasement of sound cocoons the listener into the subtle layers of the album’s myriad hidden depths. ‘The Dash’ may well still be about electronic body movement but this is also just as much about mind and soul. The album has a feel that traverses from home listening to James’s incessant nocturnal realm of DJing with consumate ease. Consistently headlining clubs and festivals throughout Europe and beyond as one of the UK’s most revered techno DJs, the album gives us glimpses into a twilight world full of sweaty handshakes, dimly lit clubs and smoke filled caverns. Now incorporating a computer into his DJ sets, which has effectively become the third turntable, it has allowed him to explore and return to classic house and electro tracks that simply could not previously fit into his sets. “I can now layer sounds underneath old tracks to counteract the sonic deficiencies they have with modern records and manipulate them far beyond what you can achieve solely with vinyl,” he says of his re-shaped DJ sets. Similarly old house records were literally too slow to play but Ruskin’s use of new technology has helped to bring those elements back and join the sounds of his formative years with modern techno compositions. Whilst the first two Tresor albums, ‘Point 2’ and ‘Into Submission’, were integrally linked and part of a more extreme sound, ‘The Dash’ marks a new beginning in many ways. “It’s not as forceful as the previous two albums,” he points out. “My aim was to try to bridge the gap between music designed to listen to and music I would use as a DJ at the weekend” and Ruskin’s slow burning fourth studio album achieves this objective in abundance.
Tidspunkt: 23:00, Entré: 70 kr. Prosumer: Won’t you dance with me? This is of course a rhetorical question. There are few DJs that would rather get a yes. Since the Berliner-by-choice Prosumer lasciviously whispered this line on his second record and first genuine hit (The Craze for the revered Playhouse label), he grew to be one of the most impressive producers and DJs of today. His artist name stems from Alvin Toffler’s significant science-fiction book The Third Wave, which also inspired Juan Atkins to call his music “techno” and fuses “producer“ and “consumer” into one. In reality, that’s what Prosumer does. He produces and consumes house music. Being the essence of his creative work, he deals with it in a way that is traditional, honest, up-front and most of all very personal. There are no limitations; stereotypes lose their impact and the supposedly very rigid formulary of house music, suddenly bears new entries. Of course, the base is rock-solid: Detroit, Chicago and New York are the twin cities that shaped his sound since he started playing records in the late nineties. But the Panorama Bar resident always has been one to accept ricochets from all kinds of camps, times and systems. The only rule: emotionality trumps effectiveness. This is what makes his DJ-sets such rewarding experiences. Despite drawing from fifteen years of record shopping at Hard Wax, Prosumer is not an oblivious missionary of the absolute truth. He is an adoring DJ-at-heart who stands up for his own verity. All of that is stunningly bound in his first official mix “Panorama Bar 03” as well as continued and refined in his studio work. Whether with Murat Tepeli (deeply eternalized on their long player Serenity) orTama Sumo for Ostgut Ton, with his own releases, while remixing other artists or in front of the microphone – this Prosumer has found his own voice already. Tama Sumo: „Music is pure communication – stay in contact and follow your heart!“ Heart, emotion and passion instead of pure functionality – these are Tama Sumo’s dj characteristics in a nutshell. She started out in 1993 at the Drama bar in Berlin / Kreuzberg, one of the first bars to ever feature its own dj at the weekend and an important hang out for the scene before going to the clubs. Besides, the Drama has been one of the few locations playing house music, when techno was dominating all the other clubs and bars at that time. Tama Sumo used to play a lot of New York style vocal house and quickly became a regular DJ behind the decks at the gay saturdays at Café Moskau. In the beginning of 1994 she started playing regulariy at the legendary Techno-Club Globus/Tresor and became a resident DJ at this location for the following years. Here she began to integrate different electronic-music-genres into her house sets, a mixture, she conctantly improved over the years and which by now has become so sigificant for her long sets. Since 2001 Tama Sumo also played regulariy at the „Dance With The Aliens“-Party at the old OstGut, the predecessor of Berghain, which eventually opened the door to a residency at the new Panoramabar & Berghain. In the meantime she developed a varied style ranging from House in all its colours, combined with reduced Techno, old Electro, Disco and Pop. Altogether her sets feature a lot of bass, sometimes melody, always deep, sexy, dirty, jacking, rough and funky. „Music for me is something very subjective and I always attempt to approach it with my intuition,” Tama Sumo comments. „To be a DJ for me means to be in touch with the audience without speaking and to interact with the crowd and give them what they need while staying true to myself at the same time. It’s also fundamental to my work that I succeed at letting the music, the crowd and myself run freely. I have to turn off my head and go with the flow. I love to create and play with different moods and atmospheres. And I’m still fascinated by the fact that music can release a huge amount of energy and fun immediately. Music and bass in particular make people happy!“ At the beginning of 2008, she has finally released her first record. Both tracks, “Play Up” and “Brothers, Sisters”, have been produced in collaboration with Prosumer. They perfectly sum up Tama’s take on house music: two rough and funky tracks which made the DJ Top 50 of German Groove Magazin at first go.
Tidspunkt: 23:00, Entré: 70 kr. Fri, 06 Jan 2012 15:51:43 GMT http://www.soundvenue.com/people/kalender/event?id=7884 Under 300 with Loco Dice + Martinez, Culture Box, 10-02-2012 http://www.soundvenue.com/people/kalender/event?id=7885 Culture Box & Standard Events presents: Under 300 LOCO DICE (Desolat/Minus/DE) MARTINEZ (Moon Harbour/Cadenza) Presale tickets available at Resident Advisor: www.residentadvisor.net/event.aspx?318024 Loco Dice is someone who can puzzle together intangible moods with a direct approach. Via his DJ sets or his productions on labels like M_nus, Cadenza, Ovum, Four Twenty and Cocoon, he merges perspectives in his delicate sense for sounds and reflective atmospheres, underpinned with solid, physical grooves inspired by the hip hop that was his early sonic stomping ground in the mid- to late ‘90s. There’s something there for the dreamers, as well as for the 9-to-5ers who just want to lose everything in a moment of abandon on the dancefloor. Don’t think that merging of perspectives is accidental. This Loco Dice, with his mercurial temperament, may let his thoughts run away with him, but he tends to chase those ideas and make them into an artistic reality. His DJ sets, whether at Germany’s biggest rave Timewarp, Cocoon in Ibiza or a beach party in South America, are spontaneous orchestrations fueled by the nuances of a night/venue/crowd. He began a fruitful studio partnership with Martin Buttrich in 2002 leading to tracks like Phatt Dope Shit, Menina Brasiliera, and Seeing Through Shadows, and these productions are meticulously planned by Dice. It’s a directorial, cinematic outlook, which permeates Dice’s everyday life, and comes not just from the outlandish escapades and scrapes that he has sometimes found himself living out in real life. It also stems from elaborate film scripts imagined as a young Loco Dice on the streets of Flingern in Düsseldorf and the Kerkennah Islands in Tunisia. This continues to be a habit of Loco Dice’s today: to close his eyes for just one minute, and see a whole cornucopia of scenes and atmospheres. As one manifestation of this, visitors to Düsseldorf early this year will be able to see an exhibition of photographs taken by Loco Dice & Martin Buttrich during the year they spent in New York City to work on the Loco Dice album. It’s an album that re-imagines the soul of a city, built from careful observations of urban tribes that crisscross and sometimes clash, of minute details and sensory impressions. Family is important to Loco Dice, as you might have noticed if you’ve seen one of his tattoos, a Chicano-style artwork with the legend “Guadelupe”. His love for music stems from hearing soul and funk in the kitchen, and holidays with his mother to Tunisia, where he absorbed North African and Middle Eastern folk music and occasionally sneaked away to watch his grandfather playing dice at café tables on the street. Family is how he’s always regarded the people close to him, and it’s how he regards subcultures too. A football player, he’s inspired by those who build strong teams of creative people around them. This sense of family is what he wants to create with projects like his and Buttrich’s label Desolat, and an artist management agency he run with Tom Preuss called Artist Alife. When you visit the office of Desolat and Artist Alife, you’re struck by the fact that everyone seems to come from a different cultural background. Loco Dice’s experience of Germany is one that includes friends and collaborators who are of African, Eastern European, Italian or Turkish descent. Loco Dice is interested in all kinds of people and artistic subcultures: he’s proud of people who bring a creative flair to what they do, informed by lives lived ever so slightly less ordinary. In that sense, Dice’s innate understanding of people: what they sense, what they feel, what they want to imagine, is a part of what distinguishes him from other DJs. He’s very aware when playing in Ibiza of the multiplicity of nationalities that are gathered there, the morass of different desires to be catered to. His inner film scriptwriter makes him capable of translating sounds and kicking it like a local, whether it’s in Naples or in New York. Loco Dice is similarly capable of inspiring, of creating that heady atmosphere that can only be experienced in a crowd of thousands. This skill of his, first cultivated at DC-10, is also no doubt informed by his experiences touring with big name hip hop artists in the ‘90s. Mark Spoon used to promise him that at some point Loco Dice would shuffle sideways from his beloved house and hip hop to “come over and be one of us”, one of the techno believers. In a sense, he was right, though Loco Dice never leaves anything behind: he still brings out classics, whether classic techno from Maurizio to Basic Channel or gritty boompty house by DJ Sneak, and he’s still fond of composing music, as linear as it may be, that draws on hip hop song structures and basslines. At the end of the day, as Loco Dice sees it, everything runs in loops, and it’s his job to trace a line, to sketch out the next scenes in this soundtrack. Even if life tends to be unpredictable, a little chancey, the next move doesn’t have to be a gamble. In fact, Loco Dice shows via his compositions that it can be very well planned. Listen to his music, imagine the cinematic accompaniments, and you’ll understand how something carefully constructed can begin with a flight of fancy, or a roll of the dice.
Tidspunkt: 23:00, Entré: 100 kr., Forsalg: 10 euro Fri, 06 Jan 2012 15:51:41 GMT http://www.soundvenue.com/people/kalender/event?id=7885 Culture Box & Heineken presents: James Blake (UK), Culture Box, 24-02-2012 http://www.soundvenue.com/people/kalender/event?id=7886 Culture Box & Heineken presents: James Blake Culture Box: JAMES BLAKE (Atlas Recordings/UK) OPIATE (Hobby Ind./DK) 2000F (Kraken/Ohoi!/DK) Cocktail Box: FINN OF TOMLAND (SE) Culture Box and Heineken presents a rare DJ set by crossover artist James Blake! Having attended The Latymer School, Blake was persistent in recording songs in his bedroom during his time in education. James began his music career by releasing his debut 12" record, entitled "Air & Lack Thereof" in the United Kingdom during July 2009. Having been releasing on the imprint record label, Hemlock, the extended-play was favourited by BBC Radio 1 DJ Gilles Peterson. Soon after the release of the record, Blake was invited by Peterson to do a special mix on his international show, including an exclusive Mount Kimbie track. Blake also sang and played keyboards in Mount Kimbie's live shows in 2010. Soon after, Blake released a 3 track EP on Hessle Audio in March 2010, for their eleventh release. A third vinyl-exclusive EP, entitled "CMYK" was released through R&S Records during 2010. The title track, "CMYK" was selected by BBC Radio 1 DJ Nick Grimshaw as his Record of the Week and also received airplay from other DJs. On 29 September 2010, Zane Lowe selected Blake's version of "Limit to Your Love" as his Hottest Record in the World. The song was a cover version that was originally recorded by singer Feist and appeared on her studio album, The Reminder. The single was released in the United Kingdom on 28 November 2010, where it debuted on the UK Singles Chart at number 47. Blake was announced on 6 December 2010 to have placed on BBC's Sound of 2011, an annual poll that highlights the forthcoming year's likely successful musicians. It was then revealed on 6 January 2011 that Blake has positioned in second place, ahead of fellow shortlisted acts; The Vaccines, Jamie Woon and Clare Maguire, who reached third, fourth and fifth respectively. It was also revealed on 15 December 2010 that Blake had been made the runner-up behind singer-songwriter Jessie J at the BRIT Awards' Critic's Choice. In January 2011, Blake was awarded Single of the Year (2010) for "CMYK" at Gilles Peterson's Worldwide Awards. Blake's work found itself on numerous 2010 year-end best-of lists, with "CMYK" ranking 24th on Frontier Psychiatrist's top 40 songs of the year, the Bells Sketch/CMYK/Klavierwerke EPs ranking 8th on Pitchfork Media's top 50 albums of 2010, and "I Only Know (What I Know Now)" ranking 8th on Pitchfork's top 100 tracks of 2010. Having spent the majority of 2010 recording his debut album, Blake revealed in late December that his album would be self-titled and would see release in the United Kingdom on 7 February 2011. James Blake, an 11-track album which features the single "Limit to Your Love", will be made available as a digital download, CD and 12" vinyl. The vinyl release contains two extra tracks, "Tep And The Logic" and "You Know Your Youth". Only days after the announcement was made, the album was leaked onto the internet. On 9 January 2011, circulation began of "The Wilhelm Scream" being released as the album's second single, with a scheduled release date of 7 March in the United Kingdom. James Blake performing at Glastonbury Festival June 2011Blake performed a new song at a May 8, 2011 concert in Washington D.C. The song is called "Enough Thunder". Blake debuted a collaboration with Bon Iver called "Fall Creek Boys Choir" on BBC Radio 1 at 7:30pm GMT on 24 August 2011. The song was first announced through his Facebook page on 17 August. On September 17, 2011, the BBC released an exclusive mix by Blake, which included 10 of his unreleased songs. These included "Deeds", "Olivia Kept", and "Evening Fell Hard for Us".
Tidspunkt: 23:00, Entré: 130 kr., Forsalg: 100 kr. The imprint's mission is simple: to release their own take on raw, floor techno. And so they have done, on 15 different occasions, earning both the label and the artists behind it the respect of in-the-know, serious techno fans the world over. Dehnert’s own productions (often informed by his grubby, dub infused and textured live and dj techno sets at institutions like Berghain and Tresor) have also been unleashed on the world via other respected imprints including Clone Basement Series, Echochord Colour and Deeply Rooted House. The culminations of Dehnert's musical experiences so far are laid out for all to see on his unashamedly dancefloor first artist album, Framework on Delsin Records. It is a self proclaimed ''collection of tracks'' on long running and high quality label, Delsin, and continues in Dehnert’s traditional vein of crafting engaging electronic music imbued with a range of moods and emotions. As you can tell from his dark, dirty techno sound, Mike Dehnert is not interested in making a name for himself, but rather just in expressing himself. As well as continuing to DJ and perform accomplished live sets (both alone and part of a series of Fachwerk nights with friends and fellow label founders, Roman Lindau and Sascha Rydell), Dehnert is touring with Delsin later in 2011 to celebrate the release of his album.
Tidspunkt: 23:00, Entré: 70 kr.
